Texturing

The carving has been all textured and ready for painting. Texturing 'makes' the feathers and other details and it is done with a grinding stone and burning pen.

Oil Feathers

Mallards have an oil gland on their rump which helps to waterproof the bird. He rubs his head on these curved feathers and then spreads the oil to rest of his feathers.

Back and Side

Side Pockets

A view of the detail on the side pockets. The Side pockets hide the wings when the Mallard is not flying.
