By laying out the wing coverts, I was able to round them from the top to the side and still
keep space to hollow out room for the inserts.
The side closest to the viewer has most of the wing covert feathers shaped and the large
covert at the back has been undercut to receive the primaries.
To shape the feathers, I use a small ruby carver mounted in my high-speed grinder. I outline the
feather with the tip of the carver and then shape it - making it low at the back and sides. Then I lower the
front edge of the feather and round the feather from front to back and from side to side.
(You can see this process on the rough-shaped tail coverts.)
